Indy Pace Car 1998

1998 marked the fourth time the Chevrolet Corvette had been selected as the Indy 500 Pace Car. Other than mandatory safety features, the Corvette needed no modifications to meet pace car specifications.

Golfing great Greg Norman was scheduled to drive the 1998 pace car, but was forced to withdraw due to recent shoulder surgery. 1963 Indy 500 winner Parnelli Jones was selected to fill in for Norman.

The 1998 Corvette’s color-shifting « radar blue » paint and bright yellow wheels presented some of the most extreme looks for an Indy pace car. The car is powered by the stock 5.7 litre LS1 V-8 engine and features an Active Handling chassis control system.

It allows it to accelerate from 0-100kph (0-62mph) in 4.7 seconds before hitting an electronically limited top speed of 250kph (155mph). Drivers looking to take full advantage of the model can request to have the speed limiter removed to raise the top speed up to 280kph (174 mph). The performance figures become a little more impressive when you add in the fuel economy stats. It consumes an average of 11 liters per 100km which is 21.38 mpg in US standards.

Jorrik records the very first Ferrari 458 Italia in the Netherlands!! It just arrived yesterday morning! We drove on a highway in the Netherlands when a Ferrari 348 past us, so we decided to follow it and we came out at Kroymans (Ferrari/Aston Martin/Maserati) in Hilversum. In the garage we saw this great Ferrari 458 Italia, we waited half an hour and than it came out for a little testride!
